aj jaeger

aj (initials for angelika jaeger) hails from Germany. The family settled in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, where aj began exploring the world of creating artwork. In 1995 she honed her skills by studying with internationally known artists through workshops with the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA). It was in 2005 that Jaeger began her formal schooling in Fine Arts at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBC-O), where she is currently in the process of finishing her Bachelor of Fine Arts.

aj is active in the art world. She conducts regular workshops in mixed media and collage, as well, she has organized numerous art exhibitions throughout the Okanagan. As part of her commitment to her community, aj has served for several years as the President of the Vernon Public Art Gallery and as Chairperson for the North Okanagan Chapter of Federation of Canadian Artists. She is part of the Kelowna Artists Collective 'Ars Longa', now in its 10th year.

aj's work can be found in private collections in both Europe and Canada. She regularly exhibits in a number of local galleries shown under the next tab.

WHAT

Statement 'Art is an Expression of seeing the World through my Eyes' I have discovered by working in mixed media and collage there are similarities between the structure of the work and the human condition. Life experiences, learning, evolving, adding and subtracting, lost and found, are all layers of my life and my art. When I feel that my work is complete, it gives me joy to share the finished objects with an audience. I invite the viewer to develop an individual and personal connection with each work. As this relationship grows the depth found in each piece of art evolves.

I love to keep my options open and always look for ways to combine Mediums, which then is called Mixed Media. These mediums could be drawing or painting material, found objects, acrylic gels and mostly fluid acrylics, where I prefer the 'Golden' brand. Liquid acrylics are my favorite medium to do pouring and mark-making, I love to explore the possibilities and incorporate the accidental happenings.

The most malleable medium of all times, ancient and rich, gentle to work with and advantages for manipulation of the surfaces. A mixture of hot beeswax, oilpaint and found objects are applied to board and manipulated for the final result.

These are my little or big treasures, I got intrigued by a friend to think about nests in an unconventianal way...so I sorted out metal yards and found my metal...I have always loved copper and particular aged ones, so I had my start and off I went to have fun. Finally I got to do sculpture! I was so excited to put my ideas into place. My Blacksmith friend Doug Alcock, t whom I owe a big thank you for offering his workshop and his help (and credits for the great photos). We went right to work for creating a firecauldron, from a collection of found objects.

I designed the leaves for the fire basket, which got waterjet cut out and then welded them on the base and slowly 'PAGAMUS' appeared.

DEEPENING THE HEART

The first task was to find a theme for the 'Atlas -Project', something that would interest me enough to research, the second task was to create something out of 100 feet of white paper. In my mind it did't take long to combine these two and I started to research 'The Heart', as we all know how important it is in our lives, if for nothingelse, but to constantly beat in our chest. The heart on the wall needed a vessel to catch all the 'love' flowing out of it...so metaphorically the nest became the place were love resides and we feel at home.
